Ephemeral art par excellence, advertising is at the intersection of artistic and sociological trends within our society. As well as exploring the historical, creative and sociocultural dimensions of advertising, this department bears witness to its constant renewal.
When it opened its poster museum (Musée de l’Affiche) in the rue de Paradis in 1978, UCAD confirmed its role of exploring all avenues of the decorative arts, including the most ordinary, commonplace aspects shared by all, and it was a forerunner in this field.
It returned to the rue de Rivoli in 1990, and since 1999 the Musée de l’Affiche, renamed Musée de la Publicité, has been installed in permanent exhibition rooms designed by Jean Nouvel.
Apart from its outstanding collection of posters (50,000 old posters from the 18th century to the Second World War and 50,000 contemporary posters from 1950 to the present day), the museum has advertising films (over 20,000 French or foreign films from the 1930s to the present day), press advertisements (over 30,000), radio commercials, promotional objects…
The museum also has a multimedia library open to the public with 12 workstations where visitors can search the museum’s collections and a reading room for consulting the international specialist press.
