The Symbols of Imperial Power

The coronation of Napoleon I in 1804 led to the establishment of an imperial court with a luxurious lifestyle. Major commissions were awarded for the refurbishment of French palaces, contributing to the country’s economic recovery. The Empire’s political power and military victories were celebrated in every art form. The symbols of war and victory appeared on luxury silverware and large bronzes, which were decorated with allegorical figures, laurel wreaths, military trophies, helmets and swords.
