Artifacts of the early 1900s

Large display cases present the various reseach paths taken by Art Nouveau artists. Those devoted to the work of Émile Gallé aim to show the designer’s evolution, from historicism to Art Nouveau; another illustrates Japanism and the influence of Japanese decorative arts on Art Nouveau objects, with works in porcelain, faience, glass and metal (by Jean Carriès, Paul Jeanneney, Georges Hoentschel, the Christofle Company, etc). The similarity between these pieces and the Japanese works is based on a profound understanding of the rules of Japanese art rather than a mere transcription of exotic themes.
